The goal of the Bermuda Dive Site and Protected Moorings Program is to protect Bermuda’s coral reefs from human-related damage. The project established and maintains moorings on 47 buoyed dive sites, with 30 of them officially designated as protected sites under the Fisheries Protected Areas Order 2000.
Several popular dive sites in Bermuda, including North Rock, Eastern Blue Cut, and Western Blue Cut, have multiple moorings to ensure visitor safety and prevent damage to the marine environment.
These mooring systems are primarily deployed to ensure that little to no damage to the reef and surrounding areas of protected sites occurs due to recreational, educational, scientific and commercial tour boats. The Bermuda Zoological Society administers the program in collaboration with the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. Bermuda Marine Services, a professional marine services team, creates and deploys the mooring systems.
